The answer will take you less than a minute.

DO ANY OF THESE SITUATIONS SOUND FAMILIAR?

Would you like to turn bark into an additional revenue stream for the sawmill?

Are the operating costs of tools (saws, knives) increasing over time?

Does the quality of raw material from the forest sometimes affect production efficiency or cause downtime?

Do you sometimes lose time preparing logs for processing?

Would you prefer to invest well once, instead of replacing machinery every few years?

Do you care about a machine that can be easily serviced and maintained for years?

What is a wood debarker?

A wood debarker is an industrial machine used for mechanically separating bark and impurities from the surface of round wood — from both coniferous and deciduous trees. This is most often done through milling or a system of rotating knives.

Its task is to prepare the raw material for further processing in a repeatable and controlled manner.

How does a milling debarker work?

A milling debarker uses a head equipped with carbide knives that mechanically cut the bark from the surface of the log.

  • Effectively removes bark along with impurities
  • Dedicated to coniferous wood (pine, spruce, fir) and deciduous wood (oak, beech, poplar)
  • Allows precise surface cleaning
  • Ensures high repeatability of the process

6 reasons why it’s worth having a debarker

Benefits of debarking wood before further processing

1. Reduced wear of saws and tools

Removing sand and impurities reduces the wear of saws and knives, which extends their lifespan by up to 100%.

2. Higher production efficiency

Clean raw material allows working at optimal speed — reduces downtime and retooling.

3. Energy and commercial value of bark

Bark is not waste — it can be sold as biomass or used as fuel. From 1000 m³ of debarked raw material, typically 250–350 m³ of chips are produced.

4. More accurate measurement and settlement of raw material

Log measurement takes place after debarking. The bark content in round wood is usually about 5–15% of volume (depending on the species).

5. Higher prices for sawdust and by-products

Sawdust produced after bark removal is clean — it fetches significantly higher market prices than sawdust contaminated with bark.

6. Improved cutting quality

Removing bark and impurities ensures the saw enters the wood evenly, with less resistance and a lower risk of “wandering” cuts.

Debarker Configurations

Each debarker is custom-made and tailored to the client’s working conditions. The most commonly chosen configurations are:

Configuration 1 — head movement relative to the log

The debarking head moves along the stationary log. The operator controls the feed speed, the speed of the rotating log, and the direction of rotation.

Sample equipment:

  • Roller conveyor with 6 gear wheels — log rotational movements left-right, speed adjustment
  • Hydraulics: head movement up-down, lock, ejection of debarked log
  • Smooth adjustment of rotational movements and head feed
  • Bark transport: horizontal feeder + inclined to a height of 3.6 m
  • Insulated, illuminated control cabin (year-round)
  • Cross feeder for raw material dosing logs individually
  • Horizontal raw material feeder 6000 mm, 5-runner, two independent sections
  • Hydraulic unloading ramp with debarked log storage

Configuration 2 — the log moves along the track

The debarking head is stationary, and the log along with the roller conveyor moves along the track. Recommended when the ejection of the debarked log is to occur in the same direction as loading.

Example equipment:

  • Roller conveyor with 10 sprockets — rotational movements of the log left-right, speed adjustment
  • Track length of 15 m
  • Hydraulics: head movement up-down, lock, debarked log ejector
  • Smooth adjustment of rotational movements and log movement
  • Bark transport: horizontal feeder + inclined to a height of 3.6 m
  • Insulated, illuminated control cabin (year-round)
  • Cross and horizontal raw material feeder 6000 mm, two independent sections
  • Hydraulic unloading ramp with debarked log storage

Configuration 3 — 2-in-1 debarker with root flare reducer

Combination of standard debarking technology with an additional head for processing root flares — for logs with a large number of butt swellings.

Example equipment:

  • Roller conveyor with 6 gear wheels — log rotational movements left-right, speed adjustment
  • Hydraulics: head movement up-down, lock, ejection of debarked log
  • Smooth adjustment of rotational movements and head feed
  • Bark transport: horizontal + inclined conveyor up to a height of 3.6 m
  • Insulated, illuminated control cabin (year-round)
  • Delimber (root flare reducer) with centering hydraulic pressure
  • Remote control up to a distance of 30 m
